More on CoQ10
Cell Energy Production and Antioxidant

Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance in living cells that helps with aerobic cell respiration (conversion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins to carbon dioxide and water to make ATP (energy in a form usable by the body).  Most of the energy needed by the body is produced in this way. Organs with the highest energy needs, like the heart, the brain and the liver, have the highest concentration of CoQ10.

CoQ10 is also an antioxidant, or a free-radical scavenger.  Free radicals are damaging compounds in the body that can change cell membranes (the wall of the cell), damage DNA and cause cellular death. Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but things outside of the body, such as toxins in the environment, can increase the load of free radicals on the body. Free radicals accelerate the aging process and precipitate health problems including heart disease and cancer.

CoQ10, a nutrient important to producing energy in the body, and as an antioxidant, makes many important contributions to good health, including:
  • Heart Disease - In a clinical study, people given CoQ10 within 3 days of a heart attack were less likely to suffer a second heart attack. It is thought that because of its ability to stimulate energy production, CoQ10 can prevent heart attacks and inhibit the formation of blood clots.
  • Heart Failure - It has been observed that people who suffer heart failure have low levels of CoQ10. It is suspected that low levels of CoQ10 impairs circulation, causing the heart to function inefficiently.
  • Hypertension - After continued supplementation with CoQ10 from 4 to 12 weeks, blood pressure can be reduced in most people.
  • Cholesterol - CoQ10 levels are lower in those people with high blood cholesterol levels. Cholesterol lowering drugs (statins) tend to decrease CoQ10 levels even further. Supplementation with CoQ10 is important in these cases.
  • Diabetes - CoQ10 supplementation can improve heart health, manage blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure levels in diabetics. Concerns about CoQ10-induced hypoglycemia in diabetes have recently been proven incorrect.
  • Chemotherapy and Heart Damage - CoQ10 appears to prevent damage to the heart by some chemotherapeutic drugs.
  • Heart Surgery - CoQ10 administered before surgery reduces free radical damage and decreases the chances of arrhythmias occurring later.
  • Breast Cancer - CoQ10, when taken with other antioxidant vitamin supplements and in addition to alternative or conventional treatments for breast cancer; can help shrink tumors, reduce pain and induce remission.  Additional antioxidants to be used include Vitamins C, E, and Selenium.
  • Dental Disease - CoQ10 reduces inflammation, swelling and pain in the gums.
  • Immune System - CoQ10 improves immune function in those with immune deficiencies.
  • Stroke - CoQ10 helps with recovery from strokes.
  • Other Benefits - CoQ10 increases sperm count, combats aging, improves skin condition and helps with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease.

CoQ10 is found in oily types of fish (salmon and tuna), organ meats (liver), and whole grains. Supplementation is good for all people, but it is especially important for those with depressed levels of CoQ10 or for those with medical conditions where CoQ10 has been proven to be of help.

CoQ10 is an oil-soluble molecule. It is poorly absorbed by the digestive system. Experiments with CoQ10 and its absorption and bio-availability have pointed to two ways to increase its effectiveness: decreased particle size and disbursement or encapsulation in fat molecules.  "Bioavailability of CoQ10"  Zmitek, J., et.al.  Ann.
